Meet in the Lower Car Park at 6:30pm
Irchester Country Park, Gipsy Lane, Little Irchester, Wellingborough NN29 7DL
NB The gates will be locked for the general public at 7pm but they will be unlocked to let us
out when we leave!
The park was based around a major Ironstone Quarry in the Wellingbough district
called Wembley Pit. Iron dug from here was used to build Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Quarrying in the Country Park area stopped in 1941and it is now a haven for Wild Life
with 10's of thousands of mature fir trees growing on
the characteristic ridged land which was left after the quarrying finished.
There is also a Railway Museum on site, amongst other
things, this contains some sections of rail from the original
Blisworth - Stoke Bruerne Hill Railway, these were
presented by George Freeston.
